The Sibillini Mountains and National Park, are part of the Apennine chain of mountains. The highest peak, Mt. Vettore reaches 2476 meters.
The park is home to wolves, wildcat, deer, porcupine and the golden eagle along with other rare flora and fauna.
There are many fascinating myths and legends about the Sibillini Mountains, among them the Sibyl who lured travellers into her cave, and demons and fairies. The 'Lago di Pilato' (the lake of Pontius Pilate) tells the legend of how the body of the infamous Roman was dragged into the lake by oxen.'
With place names such as Fosso delle Streghe, (Witches Stream), Grotta del Diavolo (Devils Grotto), and Passo Cattivo (Evil Pass) we could put any vistor off coming here ! However you can also visit Scoglio del Miracolo (Miracle Rock), Cima del Redentore (Saviour's Summit) and Poggio Paradiso (Paradise Hill)
Come for skiing in the winter time, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding during the rest of the year. You can swim and sunbath at Lake Fiastra, or just take a drive and a picnic to enjoy with the best views in Central Italy.
Norcia is the heart of the Park and the home of the patron of Europe, St. Benedetto. The town is famous for its charming historical center and the square with the church dedicated to the Saint (14th-18th centuries) ... info
On Monti Sibillini a great number of salami are produced, pecorino cheeses, truffles, honey, chestnuts, bread baked in the wood-burning oven, cookies and the two traditional liquors of the area, that is Mistrà and Vino cotto. More info
